Representing the UK is the refreshingly unorthodox Matt O’Brien. Favouring a quality over quantity approach that has not yet projected him into the limelight, O’Brien’s selectiveness is nonetheless admirable. Last year, he delivered two of 2009’s best remixes — the eerie take on The Subliminal Kid on his Offkey Industries imprint, and the insane bell chiming cacophony-led reshape of Roberto Bosco on Mowar — along with the excellent From the Periphery EP. While “Into the Red” marks a fresh departure for O’Brien, it sees him maintain the same high standards. As usual, Matt likes to keep the listener guessing. The intro features robust break beats and atmospheric, filtered chords, but the assumption that he’’s going for an introspective approach fades as soon as the humming, pulsing acid lines kick in. From there, Matt takes the track into a dramatic ascent, guided upwards by dramatic rave stabs yet kept grounded by that intangible grittiness that “Periphery” also boasted. The flipside to O’Brien’s complex intensity is Peter Van Hoesen and Donato Dozzy’s “Talis.” It sounds like Peter, fresh from delivering an early contender for techno album of 2010, has opted to mellow out and has taken his cues from Dozzy. The result of the collaboration is a layered chord sequence that is played out over a laid back, squelchy groove. Its understated repetition is perhaps not what one would expect from one of the main proponents of gritty warehouse techno, but clearly even they need time to relax. RA (http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=7306) For fans of tough, retroactive techno, 2009 was an excellent—if not altogether paradigm-shifting—year, with a seemingly constant stream of above-average 12-inches and EPs flying in from all quarters (well, mostly Berlin, but a fair few other spots too). Judging by this offering, which sees three of the scene's most esteemed operatives laying down the goods for Belgian tastemakers Curle, 2010 lets set to be a case of (much) more of the same. A-side "Talis" is a little less moody than you'd expect from a Peter Van Hoesen/Donato Dozzy collab—the first in what, one hopes, will be a long-standing partnership—and delves a good deal further into free-flowing dub techno territory than either man's solo output has done thus far. It works a treat, hitting a smart balance between aesthetic artifice—a skillfully modulated vocal forms its central motif, underpinned by taut kicks and slinky claps—and body-rocking dance floor swing. B-side "Into the Red," on the other had, goes straight for the gullet, wrapping bombastic, shard-like splices of melody around flatulent bass and a shuffling, stop-start 4/4 stomp. It's quite the tonic to what, unsurprisingly, is a painfully classy A-side, and played at the appropriate moment (around 4 AM on a Sunday morning), will be sure to have ravers in a perfect state of delirium. (4/5) DJ (http://www.djmag.com/music/reviews?id=15534#15534) For their latest missive, Belgian label Curle secure the services of some of European techno's finest producers. The UK's Matt O'Brien drops a frenetic, dense breakbeat bomb, its grinding and screeching bass reaching up to rave techno's highest pinnacle. Van Hoesen's collaboration with Dozzy is a departure from his usual menacing warehouse sound. It must be Dozzy's influence, because 'Talis' is an unhurried, dubby techno jam that grooves away to infinity. (4/5) FACT (http://www.factmag.com/2010/04/13/peter-van-hoesen-donato-dozzy-matt-obrien-curle024) This is just an odd little twelve. Everything about it, really. The pairing of Matt O’Brien and Van Hoesen/Dozzy is odd to begin with, O’Brien’s aggressive dancefloor mania clashing with the more reserved and muted dub-techno of Peter Van Hoesen and Donato Dozzy’s bass-driven work. This single on Belgian label Curle is admittedly a bit of a bit of a ying-yang affair with two drastically different sides, but even more surprising is that the Hose/Dozzy track is not anywhere close to the brooding bassy monster you’d expect. Instead, ‘Talis’ is a peaceful ride down a neon-lit highway, with smoothed-out chords and filters so heavy-handed you can barely make out their original shapes, never mind their edges. The track ebbs effortlessly, lights spreading out as they wash over the windscreen, vehicles passing by in exaggerated slow motion. The road starts to get bumpy as the bass worms its way in, getting closer and closer to the surface and causing little tremors until it erupts in a glorious natural light show of aurora borealis, subtly raving and reaching its natural conclusion – rarely does techno sound this graceful. O’Brien’s turn is a bit more assertive, though considering his back catalogue it’s a rather restrained job. Volleys of percussion hit the aptly-named ‘Into The Red’ like rapid-fire waves cresting on a beach, knocking the track under the surface and muffling the sounds for a few seconds a time; the classic, nostalgic bassline keeping it under until the blackout. Then the track goes nuts: massive acid spikes exploding like hi-NRG trapped in a tiny box, siren strings wailing, scifi chords, everything you could want in a cheeky rave-up track. It does feel a bit disingenuous to have such a banger on the same release as ‘Talis’ – after being wowed by that track’s subtle dignity it sounds almost obnoxious. But a few minutes in you’ll be too lost in O’Brian’s soupy basslines to think about that anymore. What Curle have done here is something magic, taking two uncharacteristic tracks from producers with little in common and somehow made them fit together perfectly, like two sides of a very, very valuable coin.
